Arkansas after the Civil War was in a period of Reconstruction, which left the State agriculturally lost going forward. Northwest Arkansas was an area that had not developed to the region we have become familiar with today. Baren and desolate, the mountain terrain made the region for most of the 19th century inaccessible from most communities. The online exhibit presented looks to explore how prominent horticulture groups introduction of apple orchards shaped the region and developed the region from a desolate and unproductive region at the end of the Civil War Into a sprawling community that supported its own economy through the success of the Apple Industry. It looks to capture the events prior to the introduction of railroads in the State, and how its introduction heavily influenced the success of the industry.
