Community Packing Apples in Northwest Arkansas

The photograph showcases the massive scale of apple production in Northwest Arkansas during the 20th century. After a successful harvest, the apples were hand picked individually and packed in wooden barrels to be shipped across rail lines. During the 20th, on a successful harvest, an average of 4-5 train cars of packed apples would be shipped daily by each individual community growing apples in the region. The scale was gigantic, which required help throughout the harvest season, which showed how the region was able to both profit and provide jobs through this successful model while spreading Arkansas products nationwide.

Northwest Arkansas had grown into vital community that supplied most of the country’s apples domestically. A sense of culture and pride is formed surrounding the beautiful blossom orchards, and its shown in the 1901 Arkansas State Assembly Meeting.
